Room fresheners are decorative elements and at the same time items that contribute to the harmony and well-being of a room.

Mariana Sampaio, Marketing Director of Mundo Aroma, a company specialized in this segment, points out the direct relationship that aromas have with the stimulation of sensations, increase concentration, hunger, and even sexual appetite," he says.

In addition, keeping the environment pleasantly scented influences our behavior: "It makes us interact with the environment and with people, influencing our attitudes and feelings," says Sampaio.

Air freshener types and fragrances

There are several types of air fresheners and several fragrances as well, but you have to choose carefully the right model for each room. One of the factors that must be taken into consideration when choosing the type of room freshener is the amount of fragrance you want to spread around and also the size of the room.

"For larger spaces, the manual sprays tend to work better, because they immediately scent the environment. For small spaces, such as drawers and cars, the perfumed sachet is the best.option, since the strength of the diffusion of this product happens in a milder way", points out the professional.

In addition to the already mentioned types of flavorings, such as stick diffusion, sprays, and sachets, there are also incense sticks, candles, and plugs.

One should also think about the most appropriate fragrance for each room when choosing the air freshener, because this affects the perception we have of the environment and the sensations it causes us. For this reason, Mariana Sampaio helped us think of the most appropriate fragrances for the parts of the house:

    • Living room: As this is an environment where friends, family, and guests are usually welcomed, the professional says that "the ideal is to choose essences that are cheerful, energizing, and help to harmonize. Lemongrass, lemon balm, bamboo, and leaves are some options. However, if the intention is to maintain a more intimate atmosphere, intense floral scents are the most indicated.
    • Bathroom: "The bactericidal essences, which give that pleasant feeling of cleanliness and freshness, are the most indicated for this environment, such as rosemary, lemon, and bergamot," suggests Sampaio.
    • Kitchen: The ideal in this room is to use essences that harmonize the aromas of the food itself and neutralize the smell of fat. Mariana Sampaio says that "citric and refreshing scents, such as passion fruit, are good options. Herb and spice aromas also match and can open the appetite, also helping digestion."
    • Room: These environments must be the most calm and tranquil of the house, therefore, "you must use essences that bring tranquility and well-being, that induce sleep and help relaxation, such as lavender, for example. If the idea is to favor physical contact and flirting, however, you can opt for aphrodisiac essences, such as vanilla and patchouly," says Sampaio.
    • Office: "In the area where financial matters are usually resolved, it is valid to use essences that attract prosperity, such as cinnamon and other spices. If the area needs an atmosphere to favor concentration and focus, an essence with invigorating properties, such as orange blossom, is suggested.

Make yourself your own room scent

If you don't want to buy a ready-made room scent, you can make it yourself at home. Mariana Sampaio points out the necessary ingredients: the essence of your choice, grain alcohol, water, sticks and a container: "Mix four parts of alcohol with one part of water and one part of essence. Mix everything and let it macerate for 3 to 4 days in a closed container. After that period, open the jar and put sticks in it", suggests the professional.

Besides the recipe above, there are other ways to make your own air freshener.

Tips and care when placing the flavorings inside your home

As previously mentioned, aromas have the power to influence our attitudes and sensations, for this reason Mariana Sampaio suggests that when choosing a fragrance we should take into account what the environment should provide and what we want to feel in that environment: "Using a fragrance that stimulates hunger, for example, in the bedroom or bathroom doesn't go well, so think about the sensation thatthat room should awaken in you and the people in it," she says.

Sampaio also says that "for a better diffusion it is always adequate to place the aromatizers in the air circulation", which does not mean to place it next to a window, because the aroma can escape tooutside the environment, but in a place that can present a draft.

It is not recommended to leave the air fresheners near curtains, as the bottle can get tangled in the fabric. Likewise, do not leave them near lighted candles and other objects that can produce fire, as the liquid in the air fresheners is composed of oil and alcohol, inflammable substances.

Think about a place to put your room freshener in order to contribute to the decoration: "The room fresheners, especially the ones with sticks, as they are always exposed, can be part of the decoration. Usually in environments like the living room and bathroom, we can use more refined and even personalized bottles", says Sampaio. So, use your creativity to add theair freshener in the room's composition.

As for the intensity of the smell, it is common for it to be stronger in the first days. If the smell remains too strong in the following days, remove one or more sticks. The amount of sticks you use directly influences the intensity of the aroma. If you want to intensify the smell, turn the sticks one or more times a day, this will make the contents evaporate faster.

In general, Sampaio stresses the importance of checking the product label before using it. "It is always good, before using any product, to read the label and see the indications and restrictions, so you don't run the risk of something unpleasant happening," he says.
