Once considered a place for passing by only, today the garage has become an important part of the house, which, as well as the other rooms, deserves a neat decoration with the owner's face.

Many times the garage becomes the only access to the interior of the residence or office, demanding more attention when choosing the materials and decorative items for this space. According to architect Sandra Pompermayer, this is one of the main reasons to choose "quality materials, beautiful and innovative, ensuring a more pleasant and elegant look for this area".

In addition, the garage is often used as a place for collectors to park valuable items such as cars and motorcycles, where they will be presented for friends and family to enjoy their achievements: "In this case, the garage can even have an ambiance with sofas and posters, referring to the collectible item," explains the architect.

Others still use the garages as places such as a workshop, an extension of the outside area, living room, refuge, and even a game room, opening a range of possibilities for the use of this environment, according to the space available.

How to choose the garage floor

For the professional, besides the aesthetic part, it is important to take into consideration the quality of the materials to be chosen for the garage floor: "Quality and not price, since many times the most expensive is not always the most suitable for use.

For example, if the garage is in a more hidden position, where only the residents will have access, then it can receive a burnt cement type floor or a simpler one.

However, if the garage is exposed to the façade of the residence, the esthetics must influence the choice of materials to be used. The professional also explains that many times the same material is used from the sidewalk to the interior of the garage. These are considered external garages, and among the most used flooring we can mention the interlocked, the Portuguese mosaic and natural stonesproduced in several formats.

According to Sandra, these are the favorites for the outdoor garage because they are draining, permeable, and resistant to vehicle traffic.

As for internal garages, Sandra reveals that non-slip materials are the favorite, avoiding possible domestic accidents when wet, besides being a good option for those who have children at home, not hurting them in case of a fall: "Among the floors commonly used in this type of garage, we can mention porcelain tiles with PEI 4, resistant to high traffic and easy to clean".

Types of garage flooring

Currently there is a wide range of flooring options on the market specifically for this area of the home, varying in quality, price, and characteristics:

Concrete floor

There are two ways for this floor to be used: one without the application of specific paint for it, and the other with paint. The first option is economical, having a low cost application. But concrete needs to be done the right way, because if the burning of the cement is not done correctly, it can start to form holes and crumble.will have to be done completely, not making up for the savings," opines the professional.

As for the second option, the paint must be applied over the burnt subfloor correctly, and it must be well prepared. It is widely used in building and office garages. "A negative point is that if it is wet, it becomes slippery", informs Sandra.

Ceramics

Cheaper than porcelain tiles, these have several options of colors, textures, and can even imitate wood and marble. For this environment, the ideal is that they have PEI 4 (high resistance), and it is recommended that they have an anti-slip finish to avoid accidents. According to the architect, the disadvantage of ceramic tiles is the noise caused by the friction between the floor and the car tire, besidesthere are smooth and slippery options.

Rubberized ceramic

"The biggest problem is cleaning, because dirt tends to stick to this type of floor", declares the professional.

Stone floor

It is resistant, durable, and when well installed needs only annual maintenance. Its cost is higher, but its durability makes up for it", indicates Sandra.

Grass or concrete floor

"We use this type of flooring when we need an open area to be drained. Besides being beautiful, its use is very sustainable", points out the architect. Still according to Sandra, many cities are adhering to the concepts of sustainability to generate possible discounts on the IPTU tax, besides contributing to the absorption of water in this area.

Porcelain tile

As with ceramic flooring, the architect stresses that it must be specific for high-traffic areas, with PEI 4. Available in various textures and colors, its price is a little higher than ceramic tile, but its finish is more beautiful. As disadvantages, one can mention the possibility of it being slippery and the noise when maneuvering the vehicle.

Hydraulic tile

Nowadays hydraulic tiles have a finish very similar to porcelain tiles, thus following the advantages and disadvantages of ceramic or porcelain tile floors. If these are made by hand, as in the past, problems can arise such as oil absorption, being more porous and leaving marks left by tires.grimy aspect", emphasizes the architect.

Fulget

Another material that is being used is fulget, or washed granilite, which is the result of a combination of cement, additives and granules of natural stones of various colors. As Sandra reports, it is "excellent for outdoor garages because of its rough and non-slip texture. Easy to wash, affordable, durable and renewable, since only the damaged areas are recyclable. Its maintenance must be done every 1 year with heavy cleaning and the application of waterproofing resin", he teaches.
