MDF sousplat with fabric decoupage

  1. Paint the entire MDF piece with two coats of gouache with the help of a brush and a foam roller. Wait for it to dry;
  2. With the piece dry, sand it gently with 220 sandpaper, so that the fabric has a better adhesion. Wipe off the dust with a cloth;
  3. Mark the size of the sousplat on the back of the fabric that you will use for decoupage and cut it out with approximately 1 centimeter to spare for the finishing;
  4. Apply glue to the piece with a brush and brush off the excess with the help of a rolling pin. Place the fabric, stretching gently towards the edges, curving the excess fabric to the underside of the sousplat;
  5. Wipe the fabric with a dry cloth to remove imperfections or air bubbles and wait for it to dry. Use the sandpaper to finish the fabric scraps on the underside of the sousplat;
  6. Cover the fabric with a layer of glue to waterproof it.

How to make a sousplat cover without a sewing machine

  1. Mark the size of your sousplat on the back of the fabric that will be used and cut approximately 6 centimeters more for finishing;
  2. Make a 3 millimeter bar all the way around the fabric, then turn over another centimeter before starting to sew with thread and needle, as if making a fuxico. Use tape to keep the fold around the circle while you pass the thread;
  3. Do not close to the end of the circle, leave a space to insert the rubber band with an elastic band or a piece of wire tied to it. Pass the rubber band through to the other end;
  4. Before you join the two ends of the elastic, dress the MDF piece with the cover, tie a tight knot, and sew to close the remaining space.

Easy Cover for Sousplat in the Sewing Machine

  1. For a 35 centimeter diameter sousplat, cut a 50 centimeter circle from the fabric of your choice. Open the bias and fold its end vertically. Position the bias on the edge of the fabric circle;
  2. With the machine needle at the 7.0 position, sew the bias around the entire circle of fabric. Cut the bias before completing the turn, leaving a few centimeters to spare;
  3. Fold the excess bias and sew. Turn the bias inside out and sew with the needle in the straightest possible position, forming a tunnel through which the elastic will pass;
  4. With the help of a drawstring, insert the elastic on the inside of the bias, going all the way around the piece. Bring the ends together and tie three tight knots.
