The American Fern, also known as Boston Fern, is one of the most commonly found species in Brazilian homes since the 1980s. Despite being a hardy plant, the fern requires some special care, so learn how to grow one of the best-selling plants in the country and add a special touch to the decoration of your living room:

How to grow and care for an American Fern

With its long subdivided leaves and a lovely shade of green, the American Fern has regained its place in room decoration with full force! Check out the tips below for your plants to grow healthy and showy:

  • Luminosity: The American Fern, like the other types of ferns, prefers half-shaded or diffused light environments. Keeping your plant near a window, under trees, or on balconies is a great idea.

Direct light can burn the leaves of your fern, and dry out the soil more quickly, so avoid leaving it out in the sun.

  • Watering: Ferns love moisture, so watering can be up to three times a week during the summer or dry periods, wetting their substrate abundantly.

But be careful not to leave the pot soaked, because these situations contribute to the growth of fungus and root rot.

Checking if your fern needs water is very simple: press the substrate with the tip of your finger, if it comes out dirty, watering can wait a little longer.

In periods of low humidity or high heat, give your American fern some extra love by spraying its leaves with water, especially the youngest leaves that are still curled up.

  • Fertilization: to ensure the healthy growth of any plant one must not forget to fertilize it frequently. for an American fern prefer fertilizers rich in calcium, either natural or chemical.

A good homemade fertilizer for ferns is eggshells. Just clean them and beat the dried shells in a blender, then put the powder into your plant's substrate and water as usual!

  • Ventilation: Wind is one of the biggest villains in fern growing. Strong winds and low temperatures burn the leaves of these plants, leaving them with a yellowish appearance and dry, brown tips, so keep this in mind before you hang your American Fern.
  • Vase: For many years it was common to grow ferns of the most diverse types in tree fern pots, but with its exaggerated exploitation, tree fern is at risk of extinction, which has led to new options emerging.

In the absence of the traditional tree fern fiber, you can use coconut fiber, or even plant the fern in plastic pots, always remembering to remove the water accumulated in the dish to avoid rotting the roots of your plant.

  • Substrate: When you buy a fern, it already comes in a substrate, but that doesn't mean that it is the best for your little plant in the long run.

A good substrate option is the union of 50% coconut fiber, 25% common soil, and 25% construction sand, or also the mixture of 1 part vegetal soil, 1 part common soil, and 1 part worm humus.

  • Pruning: Always observe the leaves of your fern. Withered and fallen leaves indicate an excess of water, while brittle and brownish leaves can mean a lack of water. Pruning the fern is simple, just cut off the dry, diseased, or very yellowish leaves.
