The romantic style is the ideal option if you are looking for a delicate decoration, using pastel or neutral tones, with touches of grace, and antique furniture. In its majority, the furniture has Provençal references, with inspirations from the traditional style of southern France, created by peasants who wanted to decorate their homes with the same refinement as the nobles. As they had simple houses, the mixturebetween rustic and refinement was present. Furniture with straight and curved lines, with many details and ornaments, represent this style.

Inspirations for a more romantic home

If this style appeals to you, but you still have doubts about how to apply it in your home, check out architect Marina's tips and learn how to use romantic decoration in different environments of the house:

Adult and children's rooms

"The bed is the most important point in the bedroom, with iron or imposing wooden structures, with columns and headboards lined with fabric. A canopy or mosquito net is an indispensable presence", Marina reveals.

The architect also suggests using a sophisticated armchair and perfume glasses on a table or a dressing table: "Furniture with a patina, giving the piece an aged appearance, is a good choice; another option is to use frills, lampshades, floral fabrics, and furniture with a lot of curves and arabesques", she says.

Rooms

"Use chairs and armchairs upholstered with floral, striped, or even plaid prints, and opt for lampshades, cushions, elaborate mirrors, sumptuous chandeliers made of crystal or even with an iron structure," recommends the architect.

For Marina, natural light is one of the main characteristics of romantic decoration, which favors the use of transparent or semitransparent curtains: "The windows can still be enriched by placing a blind, using a patterned fabric or with another curtain, in a lighter or darker shade -- these can be left to flow freely or else tied withtassels or a simple satin ribbon," she suggests.

Kitchens

For the kitchen, Marina recommends furniture with metal arabesques, pendant lights, furniture with wood details, and framed cabinet doors.

"To complement and give a romantic air to the environment, use patinated furniture, with an aged look, and fabrics with striped or plaid patterns," advises the architect.

Bathrooms

"A Victorian-style bathtub can represent very well the romantic style in this environment," reveals the professional. Ornate, curved furniture is a constant presence to represent the style.

Completing the mood, Marina suggests mirrors with elaborate frames, beautiful paintings, and granite or marble in the sinks.

Characteristic Elements of Romantic Decoration

Some elements or furniture are a constant presence in environments decorated with the romantic style. To define what they are, the architect demonstrates their characteristics:

1. furniture

"The furniture used is based on antique furniture, such as Louis XIII, XIV, XV and XVI style; Georgian English style; Provençal and Victorian style. The furniture usually has straight and curved lines, such as cabriolet legs, many details and ornaments," he explains.

Marina also points out the recurrence of upholstery at the foot of the bed and in wooden headboards, as well as armchairs. "In most cases, the furniture is made of wood or gently worked iron and can be painted in light tones," she reveals.

2. printed fabrics

"In upholstery, curtains, wallpaper, bedding, and tablecloths, floral prints are generally used, but plain or plaid fabrics can also be used," clarifies the architect.

As for the type of fabrics used, Marina points out velvet, chenille, satin, silk, tulle or voil (transparent and light fabrics), and lace. Likewise, more elaborate materials, such as crochet and knitting, and quilts are often seen in this type of decoration.

3. curtains

"Most of the time, in the romantic style, light, fluttery curtains are used with banners, a curtain rail cover for finishing, and pelmets - a fabric cover on the top of the curtain for finishing," she says.

The architect also reveals the possibility of using curtains enriched with two types of fabric, a darker one used underneath and a lighter one on top, both tied with ribbon or tassels, a type of pendant ornament.

4. objects

The architect notes that some objects complement the romantic style when arranged throughout the rooms of the house: "Candlesticks, fabric boxes, leather or wooden chests and trunks, and antique suitcases are some examples.

"The romantic style of decoration adopts a lot of flowers. The floral prints can be used either on the wallpaper, on the room's curtains, or even on the cushions of the upholstered furniture and bedding," Marina explains.

For example, if you use a curtain with yellow flowers, spread ornaments of the same color throughout the space to strengthen the romantic style," she proposes.

6. lighting

"Clarity in the environment is an important factor in this style. The environment should use natural light during the day, and when artificial light is necessary, the lamps should be of low intensity," clarifies the architect.

As a suggestion for decorative items, the professional mentions chandeliers, candles, lampshades, sconces, crystal, glass, or candle-type pendant chandeliers, which will guarantee a refined and cozy touch to the place.

The colors that best compose romantic environments

For Marina, the color palette normally associated with the romantic style is soft and low-key, hence the frequent presence of white, neutrals, and pastels.

Listed, plaid, floral, patterned, and Victorian-inspired motifs are some of the most associated with the romantic style and can be applied to everything from bed sheets, to wallpaper, to curtains, and to the sofa.

"Use pastel colors such as pink, salmon, lilac, green, and light blue, and neutrals such as white, cream, and beige," recommends the architect.

Some options for romantic color palettes:

Salmon, light gray, beige and cream

Using salmon as the main color, use it on bedding or armchairs. It will make the room more sober due to the use of the other, more neutral tones.

Light green, baby pink, white and lavender

Use light green on the walls, curtains, or in decorative objects such as pillows. The other colors should be scattered throughout the room.

Light blue, violet, marsala and teal

This mixture makes the environment extremely romantic and delicate. If used in floral motifs, the color combination will look amazing.

It is worth mentioning that the romantic decoration can also have masculine characteristics. Neutral and sober tones, such as gray and navy blue, can collaborate to diminish the femininity reference usually employed to pink tones. The checkered or striped patterning is another great option, as well as rustic wood furniture and the application of varnish. A style full of charm and that can pleaseeveryone.
