Free embroidery is great for those who want to abuse their creativity when embroidering. Delicate and super charming, it is also versatile and excellent to be used in decorating environments. Thinking of that, we will show you what it is and how to do it, besides beautiful inspirations for you to do yours at home! Check it out:

What is free embroidery?

It is a freer technique, which allows embroidery to be done on different fabrics, such as t-shirts, jeans, ecobags, and backstops, without the need to follow great rules. Therefore, it is possible to abuse creativity and bring versatility to the process. To do it, just draw your idea on the chosen fabric and start embroidering.

Materials you will need

  • Line: The skein (or moline thread) is usually the most used in Freestyle embroidery, since it gives an amazing finish to the creation, besides being easy to find in many colors. However, if you do not have this type of thread, it is possible to do Freestyle embroidery with other types, such as Pearl or sewing thread.
  • Needle: There are several needle models on the market, such as those indicated for embroidering on thick, flat or light fabrics. So, think about what fabric the embroidery will be made on and use the needle that is most indicated for it.
  • Scissors: should be fine tipped and used only for cutting the lines.
  • Rack: You can buy one made of wood or plastic: the former is widely used for decoration, and the latter damages the fabric less. Also, consider whether you want a hoop with or without a clamp. The former model allows you to adjust the hoop according to the thickness of the fabric, but the latter looks better for decoration.
  • Raw cotton: This is considered the best fabric for freestyle embroidery because it has no elastane and is resistant. Since it is easier to handle, unbleached cotton is recommended for beginners. However, if you do not have this fabric at home, linen, tricoline, and cambric are also recommended for freestyle embroidery.
  • Graphics: graphics are ready-made scratches of phrases, drawings, and images to be embroidered on the fabric. This item is not mandatory, but can be very helpful for those who are just starting out.

It is also important to remember that, despite being a looser technique, free embroidery has stitches that can and should be used in your creations.

5 free embroidery stitches to create beautiful pieces

Free embroidery has several types of stitches, some easier and others more complex. The nice thing about this technique is that you can mix them, that is, use more than one stitch in the same creation:

1. running stitch

This is one of the basic and simplest free embroidery stitches. It is very charming and can be used for outlines as well as for fillings. To do it, you must start the chains inside the center of the previous stitch. That way, the entire embroidery will have a chain finish, just like the bear coat in the picture.

2. point behind

The backstitch is another simple free embroidery stitch, suitable for beginners. It is often used to make outlines and letters, but can also be used for specific fills. The name is due to the fact that the stitch is literally done backwards.

3. hue point

It is a point formed by straight lines very close to each other. It is used to make fills, as in the image above. The hue point is indicated for large fills and work with a shaded effect.

4. full point

Like the hue, the filled dot is formed by close straight lines and is used for fills. However, it is suited for smaller fills, such as the flowers in the image.

5. rod point

It forms a kind of braid in the embroidery and is great for those who wish to give a raised effect to the work. Although it is more suitable for making outlines, it can also be used in fills, as happened in the image above. However, to have a nice result, the stitches need to be made close together.

Once you have learned these free embroidery stitches, you will be able to make beautiful outlines and fills in your creations! Try them out on different embroidery designs until you get the hang of it and see which ones you like best.
