If you've ever researched furniture for your home, you've probably come across the acronyms MDF or MDP. Now, what are the differences between these materials? When to use each one? What are the advantages? To clear up these and other doubts, just read this post to the end: architect Emílio Boesche Leuck (CAU A102069), from Leuck Arquitetura, explains everything you need to know.
What is MDF
According to Emílio, both materials are made of medium-density reforested wood compound (pine or eucalyptus). MDF, however, "is composed of finer wood fibers mixed with resin, resulting in a more homogeneous material," comments the architect.
MDF is indicated for furniture projects where rounded, curved or low relief corners will be used, and furniture that will be painted. Compared to MDP, MDF allows more creativity in design, since it is a more homogeneous material, allowing for rounded and machined low relief finishes. Good option for kitchens and closets.
What is MDP
Different from MDF, "MDP is made in layers of wood particles pressed with resin in three distinct layers, one thicker in the center and two thinner on the surfaces", explains Emílio. The architect comments that it is important not to confuse MDP with particleboard: "particleboard is formed by a mixture of wood residues such as dust and sawdust, glue and resin. It has low mechanical strength andlow durability".
According to the architect, MDP is indicated for furniture with straight, flat lines and is not suitable for painting. Its main advantage is mechanical resistance - and, for this reason, it can be used in bookcases and shelves, for example.
